Prior to their 2018 royal wedding, Prince Harry admitted that he and Meghan Markle had “honest chats” about what a long-term relationship with him would entail.
The media coverage of their relationship caught the royals off guard.
Prince Harry, who grew up in the British royal family and is accustomed to media attention, acknowledged that he “tried to warn” Meghan about how her life would be put in the spotlight, but even he acknowledged that they were “totally unprepared” for what transpired when their relationship became public.
After going on a blind date in the summer of 2016, they dated secretly for a while before the relationship became public knowledge.
When they announced their engagement in November 2017, interest only increased further, and Meghan responded that she was “naive” when asked if she realised the gravity of joining the royal family.
“Having experienced this learning curve over the past year and a half, I believe I can say, as naive as it seems now, that I had no idea what it would be like.

Prior to their engagement in 2017, Prince Harry acknowledged warning Meghan about royal life.
I made every effort to warn you, Harry continued. But I believe that after the first five or six months that we had to ourselves, both of us were really taken aback by what actually transpired after that.
We were completely unprepared for what transpired after that, but I believe you can have as many chats as you like and attempt to prepare as much as you can.
The media attention she received as a result of their relationship, Meghan continued, was completely different from her prior success as an actress on Suits.
“I believe there is a misunderstanding that because I have experience in the entertainment world, I am familiar with this.
However, despite working and being on my programme for, I believe, six years at that point, I have never really been a part of the tabloid culture or pop culture in general, and I have led a really sedate life.

“That was a fairly noticeable improvement right away. And I believe that at first, we were just bombarded so hard with a lot of untruths that I decided not to read anything, positive or negative, because it didn’t make sense. Instead, we concentrated all of our efforts solely on preserving our union.”
Later in the interview, when Prince Harry discussed the responsibility he felt in asking Meghan to join the royal family and how he always intended to put their relationship first, the topic was brought up once more.
“Of course, that sense of duty was fundamentally present from the beginning, or perhaps a few months in when I suddenly realised I felt, I knew that I was in love with this person, and I hoped she felt the same way about me.
