San Francisco: According to outage tracker Downdetector, tens of thousands of customers reported being unable to access several Google services on Monday night.

More than 40,000 customers reported problems using Google’s services, primarily the maps and search engine, including in New York City and Denver, Colorado.

Around two hours into the outage, reports started to fall off, but according to Downdetector, a few customers were still having issues using Google’s calendar and cloud services.

A Google spokeswoman issued the following statement: “We are aware of a software update issue that happened late this afternoon Pacific Time and temporarily impaired the availability of Google Search and Maps. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

We promptly fixed the problem, and now our services are operational again.

Some users who attempted to use Google posted screenshots of the 500 error message they received, which stated that the server “encountered a problem and could not finish your request,” on Twitter.
